This is the most common question we get on an Ocala estimate visit. Vinyl costs noticeably more up front and then stops costing you anything. Wood is cheaper to install and keeps asking for money. Here is where the lines actually cross in Central Florida conditions.
Short answer
Vinyl costs roughly 30 to 50 percent more to install. On a 200ft fence it typically overtakes wood on total cost somewhere between year 8 and year 11. If you are staying longer than about a decade, vinyl wins. If not, wood is the rational choice.

Those staining figures assume you actually do it. Most people do not, which lowers the ten-year cash cost of wood and shortens its life to the low end of the range instead.
Where wood is still the right call
- You are selling within five years. The vinyl premium will not be recovered in sale price at anything like full value.
- You want a specific look. Board-on-board, horizontal slat and cedar have a character vinyl does not replicate.
- Long runs on a budget. On 400+ feet the absolute dollar difference gets large fast.
- You enjoy the maintenance. Some people genuinely do, and a sealed wood fence looks excellent.
- Repairability with local material. A damaged board is a trip to any lumber yard in Ocala, not a manufacturer color match.
Where vinyl wins clearly
- Pool enclosures. No splintering, no rot from splash-out, stays comfortable to touch.
- Shaded yards. Under the heavy oak canopy common in Silver Springs and older Ocala neighborhoods, wood stays damp and mildews. Vinyl does not care.
- HOA neighborhoods where white or tan is the approved color and a consistent appearance is enforced.
- You are staying put. Past about year ten it is simply cheaper and it still looks new.
- Irrigation-heavy yards. Sprinkler spray on wood, day after day, is a slow demolition.
The quality trap on both materials
These comparisons assume both fences are built properly. They are frequently not.
On wood, the failure points are 8ft post spacing instead of 6ft, shallow footings, and electro-galvanized nails that rust and streak within a season. A badly built wood fence needs rail repairs by year four and the ten-year maths collapses.
On vinyl, the trap is recycled regrind material instead of virgin UV-stabilized PVC. Regrind chalks, yellows and goes brittle under Florida sun, which is exactly the failure vinyl is supposed to eliminate. The second trap is unreinforced gate frames, which sag and are the number one vinyl complaint we get called out to fix. Ask any installer to name the manufacturer and confirm virgin extrusion.
What about aluminum?
If you do not need full privacy, powder-coated aluminum beats both on lifespan and needs no maintenance at all. It is the right answer for pool barriers, front boundaries and anywhere you want to keep the view. Many Ocala properties end up with aluminum on the road frontage and wood or vinyl privacy along the sides and rear.
Making the call
Answer one question honestly: how long will you own this house? Under five years, build wood and build it well. Over ten, build vinyl. In between, it comes down to whether you will actually maintain a wood fence, and most people know the answer to that about themselves.

Common questions
Is vinyl fence cheaper than wood in the long run?
Yes, typically from around year eight to eleven once staining, board replacement and pressure washing on the wood fence are counted. Before that point wood is cheaper on total spend.
Does vinyl fence turn yellow in Florida?
Virgin vinyl with titanium dioxide UV inhibitors holds color for decades. Recycled regrind material is what yellows, chalks and goes brittle. Confirm the manufacturer and that the extrusion is virgin, not just that the product is 'vinyl'.
How long does a wood fence last in Ocala?
Twelve to fifteen years for pressure-treated pine built with 6ft post spacing, deep concrete footings and galvanized fasteners. Built with 8ft spacing and shallow posts, expect rail repairs by year four. Cedar runs longer if sealed.
Which fence adds more value to a Florida home?
Both add value, and neither returns the full cost at sale. Vinyl and aluminum tend to appraise better because a buyer sees no immediate maintenance liability, and a well-kept fence of any material beats a neglected one of any material.
