How we build it so it survives Florida

• Posts go 24 to 30 inches deep depending on soil and fence height, set in a full bag of concrete with a crowned top so water sheds away from the post instead of pooling at the base.
• Posts are spaced at 6ft on center, never 8ft. Wider spacing is how contractors save money and how your rails end up sagging by year three.
• We use hot-dipped galvanized or stainless ring-shank fasteners. Electro-galvanized nails bleed rust streaks down a new fence within one rainy season.
• Rails are attached on edge, not flat, and every gate gets a diagonal brace or a steel gate frame so it does not drop and drag.
• Pickets are held a full inch off the ground. Wood touching dirt wicks moisture and rots from the bottom up.

What it costs in Ocala

• Most Ocala wood privacy jobs land between $28 and $45 per linear foot installed, driven by height, picket style and how much old fence has to come out first.
• Board-on-board runs roughly 20 to 30 percent over a standard privacy panel because it uses about a third more lumber.

Common questions

How long does a wood fence last in Ocala?

A pressure-treated pine fence built with 6ft post spacing, deep concrete footings and galvanized fasteners will typically give you 12 to 15 years here. The same fence built with 8ft spacing and shallow posts often needs rail repairs by year four. Cedar runs longer, roughly 18 to 25 years, if it gets sealed.

Should I stain or seal a new wood fence?

Yes, but not immediately. Let pressure-treated pine dry out for three to six months so it will actually absorb the product, then apply a penetrating oil-based sealer with UV blockers. Re-coat every two to three years. In Marion County the sun does more damage than the rain.

Which side of the fence faces my neighbor?

Convention in Ocala is that the finished side faces out toward the neighbor and the street, with rails on your side. If you want both sides to look the same, shadowbox or board-on-board with a cap and trim solves it without an argument.

Can you build on a slope?

We use racked (stepped-rail) construction so the fence follows the grade with no gaps underneath, which is the right approach for the rolling lots common around Ocala and Silver Springs. Stepped panels are also possible where a level top line matters.
