Silver Springs is really two places to a fence crew. There is the older Silver Springs area along State Road 40, right where Ocala ends on the east side, near the springs and the Silver River. Then there is Silver Springs Shores, the big bedroom community about 10 miles southeast of downtown Ocala that locals just call The Shores. The yards, the ground and the reasons people want a fence are different in each, so we treat them as two jobs, not one.

Two kinds of lots in the Silver Springs area

Along the SR 40 corridor near Silver Springs State Park, you find older homes, bigger parcels and a lot of trees. The state park side of the area is a mix of forest and sandhill ground, and some lots back right up to woods. A fence here often has to work around oaks, roots and slope, and the run lengths can get long.

The Shores is laid out on a street grid with many standard size lots. It is the largest community in southeast Marion County, so a lot of our calls from 34472 are simple backyard jobs: close in the yard for the dog, block the view of the street, or replace an old fence that is leaning. Runs are shorter and access is usually easy, which keeps the price per foot toward the low end.

What wears out a fence near the Silver River

Shade is the big one on the SR 40 side. Wood under heavy tree cover stays damp longer, so it grays, grows mildew and rots at the bottom faster than wood in full sun. Falling limbs are the other problem. One big branch can snap a rail or push a post out of line, and that is a common fence repair service call in wooded yards.

Wildlife is real here too. The Silver Springs park lists white tailed deer, wild turkey, gopher tortoise and Sherman's fox squirrel among the animals visitors see. Permits for Silver Springs and Silver Springs Shores

Both Silver Springs and Silver Springs Shores are unincorporated, so neither has its own city hall. Fence permits go through Marion County Building Safety, which now takes applications and inspection requests online. We pull the permit for you as part of the job.

Some subdivisions in the area also have recorded deed restrictions. Those are separate from the county permit, so it is worth checking your closing papers before you pick a height or style. Driving directions from Ocala to Silver Springs

Silver Springs is one of the quickest trips we make from the downtown Ocala square, about 6 miles and 12 to 15 minutes with normal traffic.

1. From the downtown square, go a couple of blocks north to East Silver Springs Boulevard, which is State Road 40.
2. Turn right and head east on SR 40 for about 5 miles.
3. You reach the Silver Springs area near the SR 35 (Baseline Road) intersection. Silver Springs State Park is at 5656 E Silver Springs Blvd on this stretch.
4. For Silver Springs Shores, take SR 464 (Maricamp Road) southeast from Ocala instead. It turns into CR 464 as it enters The Shores.

Is Silver Springs Shores handled differently from Silver Springs for a fence?

Not for the permit. Both are unincorporated parts of Marion County, so the county Building Safety office handles the fence permit for each. The difference is the yard: The Shores is mostly standard grid lots, while the SR 40 side has more trees and bigger parcels.

My Silver Springs yard is under big oaks. Will a wood fence last?

It can, but shade keeps wood damp, so it tends to mildew and rot at the bottom sooner. Vinyl or aluminum is the safer pick under heavy canopy. We also lay out the line so posts miss the main roots.
